The Network A Variation on Theme by Arndt
Article by Dennis Faulkenberg Life In Art March 2008 Edition page 22
In art, variation and theme are very common. A variation is what repeats the theme yet changes it either subtly or drastically. Subtle changes, one is still physically able to see the original concept of theme outlined. Drastically changed, alters the original theme in a way that it stands out much different than the original theme. And perhaps in a way that can no longer be recognized. Today, with so many platforms for creation of art makes variations on theme more challenging yet very exciting for the audience and the artist.
Network Series was the approach, Arndt first discovered the challenges of doing a variation on theme using a variation of media for the first time. "Utilizing tools in a digital environment is not as easy as it seemed at first. I would say actually that the use of the paintbrush would be the easiest parts of rendering any of the paintings from the Network Series." She says.
Arndt mentions that the Network Series was designed in order to "face the challenges of stepping over to the computer age with my art." Symbolically, the Network Series, containing what depicts various elements of computer processing hardware was one of Arndt's first attempts of transforming an original painting into a combined form with the use of digital, analog, and paint materials.
Ironically after Arndt finished the last concepts for the Network Series, something interesting occured.
"No sooner did I complete the finishing touches of Intricacy, then noticed the top of the black paint tube getting kicked around by cats and a violent trojan horse invading my desktop computer. " Arndt mentions that even though it seems her worst fears coming true as she enters the digital arena, she emphasizes, "These minor errors are not enough to stop me from entering a realm where there is so much potential for experimentation and growth for my art."
